In one system

Tick a brand to start

Contact

Tick what is already in the house. The checker says which brands run in one system, which need a hub, which only work through the maker's cloud, and which will not join at all. Home Assistant is the platform most of this runs on.

Assumptions

Every number this tool uses is here. Where a figure is editable, change it and the result moves with it.

What the four answers mean
Works in one system Joins one system directly over your own network. 58 of the brands listed.
Works with a hub Needs one piece of hardware in the house, then it joins. 13 of the brands listed.
Cloud only Works, through the maker's servers, so it needs the internet up. 50 of the brands listed.
No No usable control path today. 12 of the brands listed.
Where the answers come from

Each brand is read from the published integration for the platform, or the maker's own documentation, and every entry carries its source. This is desk research. House of Robots owns none of this gear and has tested none of it.

Status moves. Makers add local control and take it away, and a firmware update can change the answer overnight. Check the source before buying on the strength of a row here.

Home Assistant in Australia, answered

What about Matter smart home devices?

Matter gear joins locally and it is the closest thing to a guarantee on this list, which is why a Matter logo on the box is worth more than any brand name. Not everything that claims Matter supports every one of its own features through it, so the status here follows what actually works rather than the badge.

What does "works with a hub" mean?

The gear speaks Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread or Matter rather than plain wifi, so it needs a small piece of hardware in the house to talk to. That hardware goes in once and then every device of that type joins it. It is not a per brand subscription and it is not a second app.

What is wrong with cloud only?

Nothing, until the internet drops out or the maker changes their service. Cloud only gear works through the maker's servers, so your lights answer a request that went to another country and came back. It is fine for a doorbell and it is a poor choice for a light switch.

My brand is not on the list.

The list covers what turns up most in Australian homes and it is not everything. If something is missing it usually still works, and the way to find out is to ask. Nothing here is a statement that an unlisted brand will not work.

Do I have to replace what I already own?

Usually not. Most of a house that already has smart gear in it carries over, which is the point of checking first. Where something genuinely will not join, it either stays on its own app or gets swapped when it dies.

Why is Home Assistant mentioned here and nowhere else?

Because it is what people search for when they want to know whether their gear works in one system. It is the name of the open platform that a lot of this runs on. What matters on the day is that one app runs the house, not what it is built on.

Smart homes, done for you

Tell Daniel what you want the house to do and he will tell you whether we can do it. Three bedrooms and up, full builds from $5,000, with an app made for the house.
